Harrison Rimmer netted for Wigan Under-18s against Everton Under-18s in a match being used as a test event at the new ground, and the boyhood Liverpool supporter celebrated by raising six fingers to the home fans, denoting the Reds' six European Cups. Slot joined in with the joke during a press conference on Tuesday, answering a question about the stadium by saying: "Oh, who scored first?"

Everton will move into their new stadium in time for the 2025-26 season, having dramatically rescued a point from the last ever Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park last week. Slot's side seemed set for a victory that would have established a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League, only for James Tarkowski's crashing volley to level the scores in injury time.
