As confirmed by the club’s official website, Tottenham have reached an agreement with Montreal Impact for the departure of Victor Wanyama.

What’s the word?

The Kenya international had only been a sparingly used figure at Spurs this season, making just four appearances across all competitions – his last outing for the club came in the 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League back in December.

Now, the club have confirmed that he has made his north London exit, with BBC Sport further revealing that it will be a free transfer too.

Since joining the club from fellow Premier League side, Southampton, Wanyama played 97 times for the Lilywhites, scoring seven goals and providing one assist.

Another Levy mess

Wanyama’s future at Spurs had been up in the air for a number of months now. Last summer, it all seemed perfectly set for the 28-year-old to finally leave, with reports suggesting that the north London side and Club Brugge had agreed a £13.6m deal.

But in a late twist of events, a move fell through. According to Het Belang van Limburg (via Sport Witness), the “death blow” in the deal collapsing, was Daniel Levy. It suggested that the Spurs chairman decided he wanted Brugge to pay the backlog of money the north Londoners owed Wanyama.

Fast forward a few months later, and Spurs have missed out on a potential windfall for a player who just didn’t seem to fit into their first-team plans. They have now watched him leave on a free transfer, whereas being a bit more shrewd business-wise last summer, would have seen them actually net a profit on the man they signed from Southampton (Wanyama joined them for £11m in 2016 when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge).

After all the mess surrounding the contracts of the likes of Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen, this is just the latest chapter in yet another mess created by Levy.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have slammed this ace after his horror showing against Norwich.
