The cameras picked up an issue with his eye during the game, with one side of his face looking puffy and closed up under the lights at Stamford Bridge.

According to the , Fernandez has been playing with conjunctivitis in recent weeks, with the illness stretching back across Chelsea's last two Premier League games. Despite this, he asked to play in the match, and the previous game against Newcastle, as he looks to captain the Blues back into Europe's elite competition.

WHAT FERNANDEZ SAID

Speaking on Instagram, Fernandez joked about his situation, saying: "(It was the) last match at home with this group that will give it all until the end, we have two finals left. Thank you to the fans for the support all season. My first game playing with one eye."
